A reform in numbers: How have doctoral schools reshaped education?

The transition from traditional doctoral studies to doctoral schools in 2019 has significantly changed how future researchers are educated in Poland. The new model, which features fewer doctoral students but guarantees universal scholarships, is now delivering its first measurable effects. Data from the Polish Graduate Tracking System (ELA) reveals the reform’s impact on the pace of completing doctoral degrees, dropout rates, and doctoral students’ professional activity.

Women lead gender equality efforts in higher education institutions

International Women’s Day is an opportunity to take a closer look at gender equality at Polish higher education institutions and research institutes. A study conducted by the National Information Processing Institute (OPI PIB) on behalf of the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education (MNiSW) reveals that 34% of 534 institutions, the majority of which are public, have adopted Gender Equality Plans (GEPs). To put this number in a perspective, in 2020, only one institution had such a plan. Conversely, only 4% of private higher education institutions in Poland have implemented GEPs. The results of the OPI PIB study also show that the implementation and compliance with gender equality principles in the higher education sector are mainly the responsibility of women. They accounted for as much as 81% of the respondents who participated in the study.
